A professor Deakin University says an evaluation of the outcomes of Indigenous programs should be done in conjunction with First Nation’s people.

The comments come in response to a survey released this week by the Centre for Independent Studies, which has found that poor evaluation, a lack of consultation and poorly designed programs are the main factors in a lack of results for the $5.9bn annual spend on Indigenous affairs.

The survey also found that only 10 per cent of more than 1000 programs had been evaluated.

Professor Jon Altman says Indigenous people should have more say in what constitutes a successful program or service.
