Aboriginal leaders from the Far West of NSW are threatening to close down the Barrier Highway for a week, if the NSW and federal governments continue to ignore growing calls for high-level inquiries into the management of the Murray-Darling Basin.

The move was announced on Sunday in Wilcannia IMG_2573as mob across six communities’ rallied calling for a national Royal Commission into the management of the system as well as more indigenous input.

The vital water system has featured prominently in the news in recent times following mass kills of fish in some parts due to a lack of water.

Uncle Cyril Hunter in Wilcannia made the threat to close the Barrier Highway which is the main road linking Adelaide and South Australia to the eastern states.
